![]() ![]() ![]() My dad always took us out and we trolled Daredevils, Mepps spinners, and Rapalas for them, and it was a blast. ![]() Growing up on Duck Lake trolling for Pike was always a big deal. Any serious Michigander appreciates Pike. Northern Pike also hammer flies and lures more aggressively than any walleye or rainbow trout I know of. Hook a forty inch Pike on a fly and you’ll know what I’m talking about. Sure hammer handles don’t fight hard, but nothing that size does. Another myth I hear is that Pike do not fight hard, and that is just because those anglers are not catching big Pike. This always outweighed battling crowds up on the Pere Marquette or the Grand River. The result, fishing weekends for Pike with the whole lake to myself. Why? because all of the anglers by me focused of them and completely abandoned the lakes. To tell you the truth, when Steelhead and Salmon were in the rivers during the spring and fall I went Pike fishing. Also with a little know how of removing Y-bones, they taste great! We never had good numbers of Muskies anywhere, so Pike were usually the top choice for me. Growing up in West Michigan Pike fishing was just as popular as Steelhead or Walleye when I was a kid. Northern Pike lately are starting to be classified as a trash fish in many areas, and I never understood why. Every time I hear people say, “it’s just a pike” or mistreat their reputation I always get a little pissed off. Hey did you bring the “pike net?” Which at the time was a baseball bat. Fish!!! Fish!!!! Dave its a big one!! oh wait never mind, never mind Dave its just a pike. ![]()
